Put one ministry in charge of food supply, says Rafizi

Incoming PKR deputy president Rafizi Ramli scoffed at the notion of “40 ministers showing up” to discuss the price of chicken.

PETALING JAYA: The food supply chain should be supervised by one government ministry instead of having 40 ministers showing up for a meeting on chicken prices, PKR’s incoming deputy president Rafizi Ramli said today.

He said bottlenecks in policy execution should be eliminated by integrating the various ministries with overlapping jurisdictions.

“Ideally, the entire supply chain should be monitored and enforced by one ministry. Instead, it is broken up into various different ministries.

“Everyone wants to be a minister – which is why, if you wanted to call a meeting on chicken prices, 40 ministers will show up,” he said.

Rafizi said the authorities should create stockpiles of essential supplies, such as cooking oil and grain, to be released into the market when prices rise.

“In the 1970s, the world was facing a similar situation due to the Arab-Israel conflict with a shortage of grains, and other factors. The response from the governments at that time was to implement stockpiles,” he said speaking in an online broadcast for his Ayuh Malaysia campaign.

He said the affected governments realised that although they could not directly control prices, they could stabilise prices by releasing part of the stockpile.

“What’s important is that the government have the right to obtain supply through contracts with suppliers at a specific price. So when they release these stocks into the market at a point when prices are rising, buffer stocks entering the market will reduce or stabilise prices,” he said. - FMT
