Report: Wan Saiful, Mas Ermieyati among nominees to replace Zuraida

Bersatu has nominated four candidates to replace Zuraida Kamaruddin as the plantation industries and commodities minister, according to Sinar Harian yesterday.

Citing sources, the report said the four are Bersatu information chief Wan Saiful Wan Jan, Alor Gajah MP Mohd Redzuan Md Yusof, Masjid Tanah MP Mas Ermieyati Samsudin and Terengganu Bersatu head Razali Idris.

The report claimed that Wan Saiful was the favourite in this race and his term as chairperson of the Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) will expire at the end of this month.

"If the prime minister wants to appoint Wan Saiful to this position, then he will have to make him a senator first.

"This is not impossible. Bersatu's quota for senatorship has yet to be filled. Moreover, we can't have a situation where the Bersatu information chief is without a GLC or cabinet position," the source told Sinar Harian.

On May 26, Zuraida announced that she was leaving Bersatu for Parti Bangsa Malaysia (PBM) and she would be discussing her resignation as a cabinet minister with Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

Zuraida is currently abroad on holiday and Ismail Sabri said she remains a cabinet minister at least until they are able to meet and discuss matters further.

Sinar Harian also reported that Razali was another likely candidate because his contract as the chairperson of the Terengganu Development Board (Ketengah) had already expired.

Another prospect was Mas Ermieyati, who is already a deputy minister in the prime minister's office, assisting Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Parliament and Law) Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar.

However, the source said should Mas Ermieyati replace Zuraida, it would open another vacancy.

As for Mohd Redzuan, the source told Sinar Harian that his chances were low despite his experience as a cabinet minister.

"(This is because) he was once linked to the flying car issue," said the source. - Mkini
