Incumbent Wanita Umno chief Noraini Ahmad has managed to defend her post in the party election, according to unofficial vote counts, defeating her contender Shahrizat Abdul Jalil.
After taking a substantial lead against Shahrizat last night, the Parit Sulong MP garnered more than half of the 189 Wanita Umno divisions’ votes nationwide.
Unofficial results received this morning showed that Noraini (above, left) received some 106 votes against Shahrizat’s 70, thus denying the latter’s attempt to make a comeback.
Noraini also thanked her supporters in a Facebook post this morning.
“Thank you so much to all Wanita Umno members nationwide and all my friends, who have been with me through thick and thin, for your support and trust in me as the Wanita Umno chief.
“Let’s work together to empower Wanita to a higher level!” she said.
Last night, Malaysiakini reported that Noraini and Shahrizat, the latter a former Wanita Umno chief, were in an intense fight for the women’s wing’s top post.
As of midnight, Noraini obtained 56 votes while Shahrizat garnered 35.
Noraini has held the top position since 2018, while her predecessor Shahrizat was Wanita Umno’s chief from 2009 to 2018.
The two contenders sought the 96 votes required to win simple majority support.
Umno is expected to release the official results for its Wanita, Youth, and Puteri wings elections today. - Mkini
