PETALING JAYA: Penang’s first woman mayor, Patahiyah Ismail, died today at the age of 68.
In a Facebook post, chief minister Chow Kon Yeow said Patahiyah’s contribution to the state was incomparable.
“On behalf of Penang, condolences to the family of the former mayor of Penang Island City Council (MBPP).
“I hope her family, friends and acquaintances will stay strong in dealing with the loss of their loved one,” Chow said.
Current mayor Yew Tung Seang also offered his condolences, saying he was grateful to have been given a chance to work with Patahiyah.
“She was not only the first mayor, she was also my boss when I was attached to the council’s building department in the 1990s. Her contribution to MBPP and the state will never be forgotten,” he wrote on Facebook.
Patahiyah was appointed mayor in 2015 after the Yang di-Pertuan Agong declared Penang to be a city.
She was also the first woman to be appointed as head of the Penang Municipal Council in 2010. - FMT
