The world No 91 beat top seed Jason Teh 21-16, 21-14 in 45 minutes in the Vietnam Open final.
The world No 91 defeated the world No 33, 21-16, 21-14, in 45 minutes in Ho Chi Minh City to claim his first World Tour title.
The victory marks the biggest title of Aidil’s career and caps a stunning breakthrough run at the Badminton World Federation’s World Tour Super 100 tournament.
It also ended Malaysia’s wait for a men’s singles World Tour title since Lee Zii Jia won the Australia Open in June 2024.
Aidil, who showed renewed determination throughout the tournament, produced a composed performance against Jason.
In this tournament, unheralded Aidil displayed a side to him that Malaysian badminton fans had never seen, disposing of the fifth and sixth seeded players among other higher-placed shuttlers fairly easily in his five matches en route to the final.
This was his second win over his Singaporean rival in as many meetings so far.
Prior to this tournament this season, Aidil was struggling, having made it only once to the quarter-final stage while being eliminated in the first round most of the time.
Aidil wins a cash prize of US$9,000 (about RM36,630) as champion while the runner-up takes home US$4,560 (about RM18,560). - FMT
