KOTA KINABALU:
The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has remanded a civil servant over alleged abuse of position in issuing certificates of practical completion for 15 government projects worth RM2 million involving a company owned by his family member.

A certificate of practical completion is a formal contractual document issued by an architect or superintendent to a main contractor confirming that physical construction works are substantially completed.

Magistrate Flavian Edward Henry issued a seven-day remand order against the suspect until Oct 12 after an application by MACC at the Keningau magistrates’ court this morning.

According to a source, the suspect, who is in his 40s, was detained at around 4pm yesterday when he went to the Keningau MACC office to provide a statement.

Sabah MACC director Fuad Bee Basrah confirmed the arrest and said the case is being investigated under Section 23 of the MACC Act 2009.

The provision covers public officers who abuse their positions to gain benefits for themselves or others.

If found guilty, the offence carries up to 20 years in prison and a fine of at least five times the value of the bribe or RM10,000, whichever is higher. - FMT
