EC waves off online system criticisms while Bersih agenda is insincere, says EC

Show me one person who has voted twice, challenged Election Commission (EC) chief Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof in countering allegations of flaws in its on-line electoral system.

"From the time we got independence... even now, can you show me a court case of one person who has voted twice? Malaysiakini if you can bring one person to me who has voted twice [...]," said Abdul Aziz when asked on the purportedly claims of "cloned identities".

Yesterday, Malaysiakini had reported that a quick check of the EC's recently introduced on-line system revealed names appearing twice in the electoral roll with the same old identity card (IC) number but with a different MyKad number and address.

Abdul Aziz, however, admitted that this could have resulted from "an error in the system" but it was not done intentionally by the EC to multiply the number of voters or to create phantom voters.

Meanwhile, The Coalition for Clean and Fair Elections (Bersih 2.0) is no longer sincere in its motives, said Election Commission chairperson Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof, as its agenda pushing for electoral reform has turned "upside-down".

"Our doors are open for discussions but I find that the objectives of Bersih 2.0 sudah lari (have deviated)... It is like, they have become a tool of certain quarters," said Abdul Aziz.

The EC is currently facing a standoff as Bersih prepares to rally against the government on Saturday for refusing to take measures to clean the election process, which the group claims is marred with various irregularities.

"When we met them (Bersih) November last year, the meeting was so cordial and friendly. I never saw this (the demonstration) coming. We never said we will never meet with them for discussion again," said Abdul Aziz, looking shocked.
