MUAR: Police have moved in to rescue about 30 children and four teachers of a kindergarten in Taman Sungai Abong, Jalan Sekeh, here where a man with a hammer and machete had earlier barged in and took them hostage.
About 30 children and four teachers were taken hostage by a man armed with a hammer and machete.
Personnel from the Special Actions Forces entered into the kindergarten at about 3.45pm, about six hours after the incident started at 9.30am.
A Bernama journalist at the scene reported having heard gunshots from the two-storey premises.
The man was earlier said to have asked for a gun from the police or else he would harm the hostages.
A psychiatrist, Dr Lau Keen Lee, had earlier spoken to the man, believed to be mentally-deranged, from outside the two-storey premises and appeared to have managed to calm him down.
The children were earlier heard singing, believed to be in an attempt to calm the situation.
