Batu Maung villagers face eviction over land deal

A group of men allegedly tried to chase out of several villagers in Batu Maung, Penang, yesterday despite the status of the land - believed to be sold to an ex-assemblyman in Selangor - is still pending in court.

NONEBatu Maung assemblyperson Abdul Malik Abul Kassim (right) said that the buyer’s actions in using a court order to evict the villagers, does not reflect true unity among Muslims.

More disheartening, Abdul Malik said, is when a group of men, believed to be Umno members, were used to carry out the deed.
Abdul Malik showed photos and a video clip of yesterday's incident where the men were seen wearing white T-shirts with words on their backs covered by black paint.

Former state Umno Youth chief Norman Dahlan was seen among the men in the video, while the words "Umno" and "Jelutong" were visible on their backs underneath the paint.

"I believe the crisis was created to give a negative perception so that the Batu Maung people would feel frustrated with me and the state government," Abdul Malik told reporters, today.

"The Umno and BN media are bound to publish the news from a negative angle, without reporting the truth of the incident.

"This is meant to cover up the weakesses of Umno leaders who claim to be so-called defenders of the Malays and the rakyat," he stressed.
Villagers' right to stay
Abdul Malik said he went to the site in the morning after he was alerted by the villagers that a group of men, including the authorities, had descended on them.

NONE"The situation was quite tense when the authorities insisted on vacating four homes. Their stuff were taken out of their houses" Abdul Malik said in a press conference.

"The authorities only stopped when the villagers managed to get an injuction at about 1pm to stay the eviction until Oct 1," he added.

Abdul Malik said as long as doubt continue to persist over the transaction of the land, he would continue to defend the rights of the villagers to stay put.

He urged the buyer  to come forward together with the vilagers and the state government to resolve the ten-year problem.

He said that several reports have been lodged by the villagers questioning the 1.6 acre land transaction which occured "without their knowledge and agreement".

He added that the Syariah Court in Penang, which heard the case, has yet to make a decision on who is the rightful onwer of the ancestral land.
'Give them ample time'
According to Abdul Malik further, the Penang Islamic Affairs Council (MAIPP) had lodged a police report on March 3, last year to urge the authorities to probe the case for alleged fraud.

"The land had been sold without the approval and agreement of Baitulmal - one of the parties involved in the land, said the state PKR vice-chairman.

"This is based on the Faraid certificate issued by the state Kadhi office on May 8, 1996.

"Following MAIPP's report, the police had issued a registrar’s caveat over the land, and the matter is still under investigation," he added.
Abdul Malik appeal to the authorities to give the villagers ample time, at least to Oct 1, to hear the Syariah Court’s decision on the status of the land.
