KTM land freeze in Selangor to block privatisation

The Selangor government will seek to place a caveat on all plots of land registered to Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd (KTMB) in the state and held under the control of the Railway Asset Corporation.

NONEMenteri Besar Abdul Khalid Ibrahim(left) said in a statement that this is to prevent any dealings involving the land, such as selling, transferring or placing it under guarantee.

The concern stems from reports that the federal government intends to privatise KTMB to Malaysian Mining Corporation Bhd, controlled by tycoon Syed Mokhtar Al Bukhary.

“We are concerned that the privatisation plan is similar to the Selangor water privatisation plan and this will profit certain individuals or companies while the people absorb the cost,” he explained.

“The state government is concerned that the centralisation of public transport operations to certain individuals or companies will result in the people bearing the burden of rising costs.”

Khalid urged premier Najib Abdul Razak, also the finance minister, to reveal full details and conditions of the privatisation agreement to prove that he is transparent and is fulfilling his pledge on transformation.

It was earlier reported that MMC has proposed taking over KTMB, but the railway union representing 5,000 workers is opposed to the plan.
