Pro-M leader assaulted hours before UM polls

A leader of the pro-Mahasiswa faction in Universiti Malaya (UM) has claimed that he was assaulted early this morning in Petaling Jaya by unknown assailants.

NONEThe alleged incident occurred just four hours before students in seven major public universities, including UM, are due to elect their representatives for the coming academic year.

UM pro-Mahasiswa national chairperson Edikoup Lakip Sediyanto(left), 21, has since lodged a report at the Damansara police station in Petaling Jaya.

According to his report, the assault took place about 4am, while he was riding a motorcycle back to his rented house in Section 17, Petaling Jaya.

“A Kancil stopped me and five (people inside) dragged me to a dark roadside in Section 17,” reads the report.

“A burly individual swung a helmet at my body until I fell off the motorcycle. Then they attacked me, hitting my head with helmets. I was punched and kicked in the stomach and other (parts of the body). They fled after attacking me. I suffered pain on the face and body.”
NONEEdikoup also claimed that he had first been threatened by three individuals about midnight.

“I was tailed by a green Kancil bearing registration number JDP 190. Their first attempt was to corner me on the road side when I was riding along Jalan Mahameru, Kuala Lumpur. They stopped me and told me to get off the motorcycle,” reads the police report.

He said the trio threatened him and accused him of creating trouble for them, but that he could not understand their allegations.

“They threatened me by taking out batons from the car and (saying they would) hit me. They also threatened to abduct me (and take me) to Johor. Then they left.”
Another round of elections today
The polls are hotly contested by two factions, Aspirasi and Pro-Mahasiswa, which are known for their pro-establishment and anti-establishment ideology respectively.

NONEAs every campus poll nears, the Pro-Mahasiswa faction often grabs media attention with allegations that they face numerous hurdles set by campus authorities.

They also accuse their bitter rivals of receiving tacit support from the federal government and being given preferential treatment by the campus authorities.

Currently, the Pro-Mahasiswa team controls student representatives councils in UM, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia and Universiti Islam Antarabangsa - three of the most prominent campuses.

The Aspirasi faction dominates virtually every other university, including Universiti Putra Malaysia, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Universiti Sains Malaysia and Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris.
NONEToday, elections will be held at Universiti Malaysia Pahang, Universiti Malaysia Sabah, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak, Universiti Utara Malaysia, Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, Universiti Malaysia Kelantan, Universiti Tenaga Nasional, Universiti Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia, Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia, Universiti Teknologi Petronas, Universiti Kuala Lumpur and Universiti Tun Abdul Razak.

Results are expected as early as 6pm.

The first round of polls on Sept 20 saw the Aspirasi faction sweep seats at Universiti Teknologi Mara, Universiti Malaysia Perlis, Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin, Universiti Teknikal Malaysia and Universiti Tun Hussein Malaysia.
