DPM: Okay to show Tanda Putera behind closed doors

There is no problem screening the controversial film Tanda Puteraprivately but not to the public, Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said today.

“(The movie) wasn’t screened to the general public, but to a certain group only.

NONE“I feel (the screening) must have been decided by certain responsible parties,” Muhyiddin told a press conference in Putrajaya.

He said the movie, which has received flak for its portrayal of the May 13, 1969 riots, is not allowed to be screened in the open or to the public.

“But we have decided, for the present moment, that it is not suitable for screening in cinemas,” Muhyiddin added.

The government has been criticised for selectively screening the film, behind closed doors, to select groups such as Felda settlers and Universiti Islam Antarabangsa (UIA) students, although the cabinet decided against its screening.

Asked about the selective screening on Monday, Information Minister Rais Yatim vaguely commented that the screenings "may have contravened" the cabinet decision.
Screening for Felda settlers on Najib's request
In the case of the screening to Felda settlers, Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Ahmad Maslan reportedly said it was made on the request of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.
Asked about Tanda Putera yesterday, former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad said materials on what happened during May 13should be shown to all Malaysians as a precautionary tale to prevent a future racial unrest.

“It depends. People have many perceptions. But I think that we should tell the rakyat what really happened on May 13 so that it becomes a lesson to all of us.
“As a multiracial country, if we are not careful, our country may become unstable because of constant racial riots,” Mahathir added.
