Police have picked up one of the 50 men who ambushed Parti Keadilan Rakyat Tian Chua while he was leaving a flag-raising ceremony at the Penang Chinese Town Hall here on Friday.
It is learnt that the men, representing several local non-governmental organisations (NGOs) had gathered outside the building upon learning that Tian Chua was there attending the event.
They were protesting against Tian Chua over his alleged statement which suggested that the armed intrusion in Lahad Datu was staged by Umno to instill fear among the people.
It is understood that the men began hurling bottles and other objects as soon as the Batu member of Parliament jumped into a car which sped off from the premises about 11.30pm.
North-east district police chief Assistant Commissioner Gan Kok Meng confirmed that one of the men, Abdul Ghani Jiman, was released two hours later after his statement was recorded.
