Police arrest student activists trying to enter Angkasapuri

Three student activists were been arrested today while attempting to enter Angkasapuri to meet with Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM) management over their demand for a platform to debate with Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.

NONEThe students, including Solidariti Mahasiswa Malaysia (SMM) chairperson Mohd Safwan Anang, were detained when at the gates to the Information Ministry office, which also houses the RTM director’s office.
The other two are Universiti Malaya Malay Language Society chairperson Abdul Muqit Muhammad and student activist Muhammad Akram Ahmar.

NONESMM secretary Ahmad Syukri Kamaruddin said the incident occurred when the NGO was discussing their demands with ministry officials and police.

During the discussion, Ahmad Syukri said the group agreed to meet with an RTM director on Monday before being asked to leave.

“Then Safwan turned back, after he received information that the director was inside. He entered with two others but were arrested,” he said when contacted.
NONEMeanwhile, Syukri said the trio arrested at 4.30pm have been taken to the nearby Pantai Police station, and group of students have followed to demand for their release outside the station.

Since after Friday prayers at about 2.30pm, some 40 students had marched from Masjid Ar-Rahman near Universiti Malaysa to Angkasapuri’s entrance.

Since early March, Gerakan Mahasiswa PRU13 (GM13), which intends to field an election candidate in Pekan, has sent a letter to RTM asking it to host a debate with the prime minister on higher education policy.

However, they did not receive any response to their request addressed to RTM management services director Mohd Nadzir Don.

Therefore, Syukri said the students have organised ‘Occupy Angkasapuri’ today by setting up four tents to wait for the RTM management’s response.
Later tonight, Syukri told Malaysiakini that the three of them had been released on police bail at 8.20pm.
