Police deny shooting Filipino immigrants in Sandakan

Sabah police chief Hamza Taib has dismissed reports in the Filipino media that the security forces were persecuting Filipino immigrants in Sandakan and had summarily executed them.

"I strongly deny that. They (Filipino media) can say anything but our focus of operation is only in the two areas (Kampung Tanduo and Tangung Batu in Lahad Datu)," he told a press conference at Felda Residence Sahabat this morning.

NONEOutside these two areas, Hamza said police was only conducting the usual investigations in relation to the incursion.

He also denied that Filipinos had been killed in Sandakan other than those who were killed in gun battles with security forces in Lahad Datu and Semporna.

"There is nothing going on in Sandakan, so what is there left for me to clarify?" he said.

The Philippine Inquirer has yesterdayreported that Malaysian security forces dragged Filipino men out of their houses in Sandakan and told them to run before shooting them.
'Illegal immigrants detained'

Meanwhile, Semporna district police chief Mohd Firdaus Abdullah said his men had detained “many” illegal immigrants from the Philippines in the vicinity.

This comes after six police officers were killed in an ambush at Kampung Siminul and Kampung Sri Jaya, Semporna last Sunday.

However, Firdaus refused to provided the exact number of the detainees.

“We handed them over to the Immigration Department (after they were arrest),” he told Malaysiakini when contacted today.

Hamzah said, to date, 85 people had been detained throughout Sabah under the Security Offenses (Special Measures) Act 2012 which is read together with Section 130(C) of the Penal Code concerning acts of terrorism.

Another 66 were arrested for attempting to enter the operation zone in Kampung Tanduo and Tanjung Batu, Lahad Datu since the operation began on Tuesday.
