Voters have been urged to ensure Ramkarpal wins with a huge majority. – The Malaysian Insider pic by Hasnoor Hussain, May 24, 2014.A huge win for DAP in the Bukit Gelugor by-election will set the momentum for the Teluk Intan contest next week, opposition leaders said last night, urging voters in the constituency to come out to the ballot box tomorrow.
Speaking at DAP's mega ceramah ahead of polling day, Pakatan Rakyat leaders called on Bukit Gelugor voters to turn up in full force to vote for DAP’s Ramkarpal Singh.
They said that by giving him a huge majority over the three other candidates, it would spark a momentum that PR would need to ensure a victory in the Teluk Intan by-election on May 31.
Calling on voters to make sure Ramkarpal "wins big", Seremban MP Anthony Loke said the convincing win would send a message to Barisan Nasional that the people have had enough.
"We want to win big. A vote for Ramkarpal is a vote of rejection to BN," he said to loud applause from the crowd.
He challenged voters to break the record of the biggest majority, now held by DAP's Teresa Kok when she beat the BN candidate in last year's general election by 51,552 votes.
"Can Bukit Gelugor break this record?" he asked the crowd, drawing cheers and a resounding "yes" in response.
"A large majority in Bukit Gelugor is needed to set the momentum for Teluk Intan. We are confident that it will give confidence to the people there."
A win in Teluk Intan would shake Umno to the core, Loke added, promising that it would also "demolish" Gerakan – a member of the BN coalition – for good.
DAP’s Dyana Sofya Mohd Daud will face off against Gerakan president Mah Siew Keong in Teluk Intan on May 31.
"We chased Gerakan out of Penang in 2008 and if we beat their president once again in Teluk Intan, Gerakan can 'tutup kedai' (close shop) once and for all," he said.
Echoing Loke, DAP adviser and Gelang Patah MP Lim Kit Siang said a "crushing victory" in Bukit Gelugor would spill over to Teluk Intan.
"We don’t want him (Ramkarpal) just to win but to win with glorious results. Bukit Gelugor will mark a new era of politics, followed by Teluk Intan.
"What you do on Sunday will affect Teluk Intan next week. It is not an easy battle there as we are the underdogs," he added.
Saying that the continuous attacks against Dyana, who is also his political secretary, was because Umno was afraid, Lim added that the ruling coalition knew that if she won, it would spell bad news for BN.
"Who was frightened when we fielded Dyana? Not Gerakan, but Umno. Because they know if she wins, if DAP has its first Malay woman MP, it will spell the beginning of the end for them," he said.
Kluang MP and DAP's political education director Liew Chin Tong told the crowd at the ceramah that the support from Penang was important for the party's candidate in Teluk Intan.
"This Sunday, we must win with a convincing majority so that the people in Teluk Intan will know that Bukit Gelugor has spoken loud and clear," he said.
"We need the momentum and the support from Penang because we want to ensure a win in Teluk Intan," he said.
