BN has named Gerakan president Mah Siew Keong as its chosen candidate to take on DAP's Dyana Sofya Mohd Daud in the Teluk Intan by-election.
The political veteran's candidacy was announced by Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin in a carnival like atmosphere in Teluk Intan this afternoon.
The announcement was made just a street away from the venue where DAP announced Dyana as their candidate earlier in the day.
A Teluk Intan local, Mah held the seat between 1999 to 2008 before losing the seat to DAP's M Manogaran in the 2008 general elections by a slim majority.
He had again contested the parliamentary seat at the 2013 general election, but was defeated this time by DAP's Seah Leong Peng by a 7,313-vote majority.
Mah had garnered 20,086 votes to Seah's 27,399 votes. The sole Independent candidate only won 279 votes.
The parliamentary seat fell vacant after Seah passed away on May 1 from cancer.
The contest is shaping up to be one between a political veteran against a novice - Mah is 53, while Dyana, who is contesting a seat for the first time, is 27.
Nominations will be on Monday with polling to take place on Saturday, May 31.
Handsome man
In announcing the candidate, Muhyiddin said that Mah had experienced both loss and win in previous elections, but the Gerakan chief was still "sharp in his mind."
"He contested in the last election, but lost with a majority of only 7,000 votes," lamented Muhyiddin.
In his acceptance speech, Mah urged the BN machinery to help him "snatch back Teluk Intan" for the ruling coalition.
"Someone from the opposition said that DAP is fielding a beautiful woman candidate for this election. I told them we will field a handsome man," he said to the laughter of the crowd.
"But at that time, I did not know that I will be the candidate here," he quipped.
Nearly 500 BN supporters and party workers attended the candidate announcement event today.
