Former Terengganu menteri besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Said today warned Barisan Nasional that the political situation in the state was “fragile” and anything could happen to its state government over the next four years.
Ahmad Said, whose removal this week triggered a crisis after he and two other BN assemblymen quit Umno in protest, said the BN should not take the current situation for granted.
"If we are transporting fragile items on planes, we should be careful and place 'fragile' stickers on it,” he told reporters at his daughter’s wedding reception today, which was also attended by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak today.
When pressed, the Kijal state assemblyman however did not want to be drawn on what he mean by fragile.
“You reporters should know. The state government has 17 seats to the oppositions 15 in the state legislative assembly,” he said.
Najib made an appearance at the wedding today, making good a promise he made on Wednesday, in what is seen as a sign of reconciliation between the two over the recent political deadlock in the state.
Ahmad’s decision to leave Umno led to two other assemblymen following suit – Ajil assemblyman Ghazali Taib and Bukit Besi assemblyman Roslee Daud, threatening to bring down the BN state government.
The trio have since retracted their resignation letters from Umno.
Last Tuesday, Ahmad Said said the crisis was due to a misunderstanding over his daughter's wedding date.
He had said his daughter's wedding was a matter of pride to him, adding that his resignation had been prompted by Najib's reluctance to agree to his request.
"Najib had thought that the wedding ceremony would be over by May 10, but there is one more ceremony on May 17," said Ahmad Said.
"Najib apologised to me due to the misunderstanding," he said, adding that the prime minister had also witnessed him retracting his resignation letter.
Najib, who is also Umno president and BN chairman, said what transpired between him and Ahmad was a misunderstanding.
“This was the source of the misunderstanding, but we have cleared that quickly.
“I appreciate Ahmad's actions for putting Umno's interests above everything else,” he said.
Ahmad Said, Roslee and Ghazali’s U-turn puts BN back with the majority of seats in the state assembly with 17 seats, compared PAS’s 14 and PKR’s one.
Ahmad meanwhile announced that said he would retire at the next general election.
"I don’t want to be a candidate at the next election. No sorry. I want to rest,” he added. –TMI
