Langkawi police chief Harrith Kam Abdullah has denied allegations of receiving money from syndicates in his district to protect them from police action.
This comes after anti-crime NGO MyWatch today produced specific case numbers and names of syndicate members who Harrith had allegedly protected.
The information was furnished by a whistleblower, who is a senior police officer.
MyWatch chairperson R Sri Sanjeevan alleged Harrith had ordered case number 4809/13 to be classified as "No Further Action" (NFA) to protect the boss of an entertainment centre, whose father runs an illegal lottery syndicate in Langkawi.
He claimed that there were five illegal lottery syndicates in Langkawi that pay monthly protection money to Harrith by personally handing over the cash at his house.
"No, I don't know the owner (of the entertainment centre)... I don't know him," Harrith (right) told Malaysiakini when asked to respond to the allegation.
MyWatch claimed that Harrith justified classifying the entertainment's centre case as NFA by claiming that it already had a business license when in fact the proper documentation needed was an entertainment license.
'Langkawi's a different case'
To this, Harrith said Langkawi was a "unique case" as many entertainment outlets are facing licensing issues due to land title problems.
"This is not the police’s problem, but people will complain to the police. If we want to act, most of them will be closed down," he said.
However, Harrith stressed that the police regularly conducted raids to ensure that they complied with the requirements set by the local council.
He vehemently denied receiving money on this matter and insisted that he acted according to law.
He also denied another of MyWatch's allegation which claimed he covered up case number 2793/13 concerning two men who harboured 13 Myanmarese illegal immigrants.
Sanjeevan claimed that Harrith interfered in the case to allow bail for the arrested men within 24 hours even though the investigation was not completed.
Responding to this, Harrith said the men were suspected of sheltering illegal immigrants in a restaurant.
However, he said when police took action, they found the Myanmarese in a hut with legitimate documents and could not prove that they were working at the restaurant.
"If there's not enough evidence, we allow them bail and we submit the case to the deputy public prosecutor for a decision.
"If we cannot prove that they (Myamarese) are working (illegally), we cannot detain people without evidence," he said.
Harrith also denied MyWatch's claim that the two men had paid him RM15,000 for their freedom.
"No, that is nonsense. I totally deny that," he said.
When contacted, Sanjeevan dismissed Harrith's denial, stating that he would lodge a report with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) soon.
"During the investigation period, the individual that is being investigated must be relieved of his duties until the investigation is completed," he had said in a statement earlier today.
He claimed that this matter was brought to the attention of Kedah police chief Ahmad Ibrahim but action had not been forthcoming.
As such, Sanjeevan called for Ahmad to be included as a subject of the investigation and offered MyWatch's assistance to facilitate the probe.
He also urged for the setting up of the Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission (IPCMC).
