Sarawak PKR chief Baru Bian has expressed indignation over media reports on the seminar titled 'The word 'Allah' and Christology in the Malay Archipelago' for belittling and condemning Christianity.
“I am appalled and overwhelmed with indignation upon reading the reports on the seminar organised by UiTM at its Dewan Agong Tuanku Chancellor on May 6, 2014, with the blessings of the vice-chancellor.
“I demand that the police and the government carry out a thorough investigation and that the vice-chancellor be sacked immediately so that such incidents will not be repeated in any of the colleges and universities in the future,” Baru said in a statement issued last night.
“Institutions of higher learning cannot and should not be abused and made used of by such racist and religious bigots when that public money, including money from Christians, fund these institutions of higher learning,” he said.
Reacting to the reports from the seminar, Baru added: “it was a blatant attack on Christianity and the Christians in this country without the benefit of rebuttal from any Christian theologian, and there were clear breaches of the Penal Code and the Sedition Act.
“From the programme made available to me, and the various reports on the presentations by various panels, it was undoubtedly a calculated and blatant bashing of the Christian religion, without the slightest respect for the Christian faith and the Christians in this country.
“They publicly ridiculed the Christian faith to high heaven, without any concern about the consequences of their acts. This was a public forum where non-Muslim students were forced to attend,” he said, pointing out that 12 students from Sabah were converted after the programme.
Seminar has caused strife and hatred
Baru, who was a student at UiTM, added: “This forum has definitely caused ill-feelings, strife and hatred among the students and the public at large.
“I was informed of a Christian student who cried throughout the programme upon hearing how the speakers belittled and criticised her religion.
“UiTM is my alma mater and I am deeply ashamed that my alma mater was used for such a heinous act against my own religion. UiTM has brought many of us alumni of the university to public ridicule and shame.”
Baru said he believes the seminar to be part and parcel of a bigger ploy by racial and religious extremists working hand-in-glove with certain political groups to destablise the country to achieve their own religious and political agendas.
“To date the prime minister and his colleagues are completely dumb with silence over the reports from the seminar for this reason these extremists are emboldened in their schemes as each day passes,” he said.
“If indeed Najib Abdul Razak is the prime minister for all as he claims to be, then he should act like one in the midst of such unprecedented attacks on the non-Muslims in this country.
“I wonder what the consequences would be if such statements and reporting were carried out by non-Muslims against the Muslims. Only God knows. It appears we are going down the slippery road of self-destruction. God forbid.”
