Student faces action over anti-GST Facebook post

A UiTM student is facing disciplinary action for a Facebook posting purportedly against the goods and services tax (GST).

In a letter dated April 28, the university stated that Mohd Fathihie Gadius of UiTM's Sabah campus is charged with breaching Educational Institutions (Discipline) Act 1976.

He is charged with “making a public statement via social media website Facebook which can encourage acts which breach the code of conduct, cause disruption (and) defiance” among UiTM Sabah students.

The biology undergraduate is also charged with committing a similar offence through more than 20 postings from October 2013 to January this year.

If found guilty, he can be suspended from university and not allowed to enter the campus.

Condemning the charge, Universiti Malaysia student council secretary Fahmi Zainol said the act was “cruel” but “not something new” for UiTM.

He said that at least three student activists were suspended for a semester in recent years for “involvement in politics”.

“If it happens again, students will not hesitate to rise to defend (Mohd Fathihie)'s rights,” he added in a statement.

Separately, Universti Islam Antarabangsa (UIA) student council member Nor Azhar Baharum said that the charge is a breach of democratic principles and urged the repeal of the Act.

“We condemn any efforts to use ridiculous laws to gag students from voicing their opinions,” he said.
