Widow: Shahrizat gave cash, diapers for vote

TELUK INTAN A single mother in Teluk Intan has alleged that Umno Wanita chief Shahrizat Abdul Jalil visited her house this morning with cash and supplies, canvassing support for BN.

"I was given RM500 and Pampers (disposable diapers), for my daughters' usage," she told Malaysiakini, expressing her heartfelt gratitude to Shahrizat and BN for the gift.

The unemployed 57-year-old said Shahrizat urged her to vote for BN candidate Mah Siew Keong.

P Panjalay (right) lives in Taman Semarak and cares for her three mentally-disabled daughters aged 33 to 36.

Shahrizat paid her house a 20-minute visit this morning.

The widow said Shahrizat handed her the cash, but she was unsure if the money came from the Welfare Department or Umno.

Shahrizat, who is also the special adviser to the prime minister on welfare and women affairs, had scheduled to visit two families in Teluk Intan.

Apart from Panjalay, she also visited a family at Jalan Mat Intan that has just lost an elderly family member, and later attended a religious function at Taman Intan.

Shahrizat: I'm there as welfare foundation chairperson

Panjalay said that regardless of the handouts, she has always been a BN supporter.

"I will support BN anyway. I have never voted for the opposition. I will bring my second daughter to vote too. Both of us will vote for BN," she said.

The family only sustains itself on RM750 a month from the Welfare Department, RM250 of which is spent on daily necessities.

"As far as I know, the people here support BN. So far, I have yet to see the DAP candidate come to visit my house," Panjalay said.

She said her late husband was once a palm oil plantation worker and was forced to become a contract worker at a factory when the plantation closed down.

In immediate response, Shahrizat denied that she was using cash and gifts to fish for votes.

"A pro-opposition news portal has slandered me by accusing me of giving RM500 and Pampers to voters to buy votes.

"I was visiting clients of the National Welfare Foundation as chairperson of the foundation," she said on Twitter.

Batu Dua Belas Utara, the polling district where the widow votes, is a mixed constituency, with 49 percent Chinese and 44 percent of Indians.

In the last national election, 68.5 percent of voters there supported DAP's candidate, the late Seah Leong Ping.

The Teluk Intan by-election has seen a number of cases of alleged use of gifts and promises to canvass votes.

For example, Communications and Multimedia Minister Ahmad Shabery Cheek promised to improve the constituency'sbroadband, while Federal Territory Minister Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor promised the local Indian community a crematorium and a wedding hall.

Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has told volunteer corps Rela members they would get new uniforms if BN wins, while Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin (above) yesterday launched the RM5 billion West Coast Expressway during the campaign urging the people to give his government credit.

Last Friday Ipoh Barat MP M Kulasegaran claimed BN gave outhampers worth about RM150 each to families at the Nova Scotia Estate in Teluk Intan in a function the day before.

Yesterday the election watchdog Malaysians for Free and Fair Elections (Mafrel) said such acts are tantamount to bribery.

The Election Offences Act 1954 states clearly that a person involved in certain activities that may influence voters is guilty of vote buying and bribery, its president Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh toldMalaysiakini.
