The Selangor Islamic Affairs Department (Jais) has vowed to take action against its officers who gate-crashed a Hindu wedding on Sunday if an investigation into the matter finds them guilty of misconduct.
"An internal investigation is being conducted by Jais," Jais Public Relations and Publications Unit deputy director Nurhamizah Othman said in a statement today.
"If the officers are found to have breached orders, disciplinary action will be taken against the officers," she added.
Nurhamizah said that Jais procedure states that any operation which may involve non-Muslims must first get approval from the Jais top management and the state executive councillor in charge.
"Jais views this matter seriously and will not hesitate to take action on errant officers," she added.
Jais ticked off
Jais on Sunday disrupted a Hindu wedding at a temple in Petaling Jaya on suspicion that the bride is Muslim.
Zarina Abdullah Majid, 32, was taken to the Jais office for further investigation.
However, she claimed that she was born and raised as a Hindu but her estranged father had changed her name and religion without her consent when he converted to Islam.
Jais has since said that it would assist Zarina in changing her religious status with the National Registration Department to avoid further complications.
Jais also said that it investigated the matter as Zarina has a Muslim name and stressed that it was not a raid.
Selangor Menteri Besar Abdul Khalid Ibrahim (above), however, slammed Jais for the incident, which he said was an "embarrassment".
