'Sandwiched' IGP refuses to budge

Though buried under an avalanche of criticism, Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar has refused to budge from the "middle path".

He reiterated today that the police would remain neutral in cases where there are conflicting judgements between syariah and civil courts regarding the custody of children.

According to a Star Online report this evening, Khalid said the police had no option because it was "sandwiched" between the two legal systems.

The police chief also added that he was not concerned what others said when asked if the police could be held in contempt of court.

"I have made a stand and the police will stand by it.

"I can't do anything if there are people out there lambasting the police," he was quoted as saying.

Apart from not enforcing two civil court orders, Khalid had said that the police would place the children in childcare centres.

Describing it as a "fair" solution, he added that both parents could visit the children.

This afternoon, Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi declined to comment on the police's chief stand.

Khalid came under fire from various quarters, including MCA Youth which called on him to resign if he is unable to exercise his duties.
