Umno rep in hot water for 'haram jadah' remark

The DAP has threatened to lodge a police report against Sungai Acheh assemblyperson Mahmud Zakaria for insulting the party with the words “haram jadah” (bastard) which he allegedly uttered in the recently concluded Penang state assembly.

Penang executive councillor Jagdeep Singh Deo claimed that Mahmud (left) had uttered the offensive words when Umno accused Seri Delima assemblyman RSN Rayer of uttering the words “Umno celaka” (be damned) in the state assembly on May 20.

Jagdeep said a report would be lodged if the attorney-general chambers proceeds to charge Rayer for sedition.

He was supposed to be charged last Thursday but the case was postponed.

“Are they playing around? This is a serious case and not a case of stealing chickens,” Jagdeep told a crowd of 1,500 at a ceramah in Air Itam, last night.

“We hope with the postponement, the AG will not take further action against Rayer, we want him to state his stand clearly,” the Dato Keramat assemblyman said.

Jagdeep also urged the AG to review the prosecution of the 15 intruders who barged into the Penang legislative assembly on May 21, looking for Rayer, to demand that he apologise and retract his “celaka” statement.

The 15 were charged under Section 448 of the Penal Code for trespassing, where if convicted, they merely face a fine and a one year jail term.

“Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng has written to the AG asking him to charge the intruders under Penal Code section 121B and 124B, which carries life imprisonment with a minimum of 20 years,” he said.

Bukit Gelugor voters thanked

Also speaking at the ceramah organised by DAP to thank the Bukit Gelugor voters for retaining the party at the recent by-election, were new MP Ramkarpal Singh, MPs Lim Kit Siang (DAP-Gelang Patah), Azmin Ali (PKR-Gombak),  Khalid Samad (PAS-Shah Alam) and Teluk Intan candidate Dyana Sofya Mohd Daud, who had lost to Gerakan president Mah Siew Kong.

In his speech, Khalid (right) said Rayer should not be charged for merely condemning Umno for attending a rally in Seberang Jaya in January where banners blaming DAP for the May 13 racial riots were displayed.

“But as long as Umno is still ruling this country, we can expect something unreasonable like that,” he held.

Khalid then urged Pakatan allies to remain strongly united as no single party could defeat Umno and BN.

He said many controversial issues like the seizure of Malay bibles and the interruption of a Hindu wedding by the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) had nothing to do with the Pakatan Selangor government.

He blamed it on Umno who wanted to regain power in Selangor by the back door by using the Selangor Islamic Religious Council (Mais).

Khalid alleged that Mais chairman Mohamad Adzib Mohd Isa is an Umno member, who held the position even before 2008 and former PAS leader Hasan Ali who was sacked by the party, is said to be a member of Mais.

Mais’ actions are to let non-Muslims think that such problems never happened when BN was the state government, and that all this is PAS’ doing he explained.

“Even when a PAS exco and Selangor MB Khalid Ibrahim told Jais to return the Bibles, they refused and tried to hide behind the palace through Mais,” he added.

“This is why we propose to remove Mais’ executive power, so that it would not be able to simply instruct Jais when it comes to  enforcement,” he added.

“Some people try to curry favour with non-Muslims but it was not his intention to purposely defend other religions. I only defend Islam because my religion does not teach us to do this kind of crazy things”.
