The nation's top cop has refused to comment on allegations that police made a mistake on its report about alleged gambling kingpin, Paul Phua Wei Seng and his alleged underworld ties.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar instead advised Phua to focus on his illegal bookmaking case in Las Vegas, United States.
"Since the matter is being heard in the US courts, I do not wish to comment," he told news portal Malaysiakini.
"I can confirm that we are in communication. My advice to Phua is to focus on the charges (against him)," Khalid told Malaysiakini.
Phua and his son, Darren Phua Wai Kit, were arrested in Las Vegas last June during the World Cup for conducting gaming activities without a licence.
Phua has also been linked with Hong Kong-based triad group 14K, a claim which was refuted by Home Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi in a letter to the FBI.
The letter thrust Putrajaya into the spotlight as Zahid claimed that Phua had assisted the government in matters pertaining to national security.
The FBI had also produced an internal report based on information provided in 2008 by the Royal Malaysian Police that Phua was involved with 14K.
Yesterday, Umno lawyer Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah rubbished the 2008 report, saying there was no 14K triad in Malaysia.
Shafee claimed that Zahid had penned the letter purportedly in order to correct a “mistake” in the report by the Malaysian police to the FBI.
The lawyer, who was speaking on behalf of Phua's legal team, also insisted that the 14K triad, which Phua is alleged to be a member of, has no operations in Malaysia.
