‘No 14k Triad in Malaysia, but one can be a member!’

DAP leader Lim Kit Siang says keeping quiet on alleged felon and 14K Triad member Paul Phua is no longer an option for the Home Minister.
14k zahid FBI2KUALA LUMPUR: If the14K Triad does not exist in Malaysia, it does not mean that a Malaysian could not be a member of that secret society.
That’s the thrust of the issue, stressed DAP elder statesman Lim Kit Siang on Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi dashing off a letter to the FBI on an alleged felon, Paul Phua, to confirm that the 14K Triad did not exist in Malaysia.
The Malaysian police meanwhile, noted Lim, has confirmed that Phua was a member of the 14K Triad, “a mistake” which Zahid decided to correct on his own i.e. with no reference to the police, the Attorney- General and the Foreign Ministry.
Throwing caution to the wind, fumed Lim, Zahid also went out on a limb to plead for Phua, saying that he assisted the authorities with “national security projects” and was needed back home, hinting that ties between the US and Malaysia would be affected if his letter was ignored.
“Zahid would have failed his comprehension test in school if he really believed what he said about his infamous letter to the FBI,” said Lim, also the DAP Parliamentary Leader and Gelang Patah MP.
“The Police did not appreciate Zahid’s correction, for the Inspector-General of Police, Khalid Abu Bakar made the cryptic remark that Malaysians abroad are known to be members of that triad.”
Zahid had mortgaged the reputation of Malaysia and undermined national sovereignty in writing such a plea to the FBI, added Lim, “for any such letter should have been written by the Police and not by the Home Minister – assuming that the facts Zahid referred to were true – via the Foreign Ministry”.
Lim noted that since then Zahid had stayed mum on the “national security projects” Phua had helped the Malaysian government with in the past, and furthermore, what the new “national security projects” Zahid had in mind were which made him pen the words “we continue to call upon him to assist us from time to time and as such, we are eager for him to return to Malaysia”.
Lim wants the IGP to confirm that the Police are “eager” for Phua’s return to assist on “national security projects” and thereby clarify whether the police are aware of any “national security project” where Phua has rendered assistance, or whether such projects were only known to Zahid himself.
It is no more a viable option for Zahid to keep mum or to minimise the fall-out of his infamous letter by claiming that it was only to confirm that the “14K triad” did not exist in the country as it was very much more than that,” said Lim.
“Why did Zahid send the letter unilaterally and undiplomatically, keeping both the Police and the Foreign Ministry outside the loop?
“Or is Zahid pleading that he did not really understand the import of his infamous letter to the FBI, and if so, who was the real author of his letter?
“All eyes are not only on Zahid, but also on Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak, as to how he is going to handle the first new scandal of his administration in the New Year or will he just do what he is now very good at, just bury his head in the sand?,” asked Lim.
