And that was why since then Hadi became ‘cold’ towards Anwar and PKR. He knew that Anwar and PKR tried to do a deal behind his back and only invited him to be part of the deal when they failed to get the majority they needed. But what DAP does not seem to realise is that Hadi saved them from getting kicked out of the Selangor state government.
THE CORRIDORS OF POWER
Raja Petra Kamarudin
Now that the story is already out in the open, I can give you more details about what really happened regarding the offer of the post of Deputy Prime Minister that Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak was alleged to have made to Anwar Ibrahim.
If you can remember, I did write about this matter earlier, maybe about a year or so ago (I even uploaded some photographs), and this was an episode that happened around Christmas of 2013.
The only problem is, while the incident did happen, no doubts about that, PKR’s version is slightly different from the version that I was given. What Rafizi Ramli and Nurul Izzah Anwar have revealed is sort of the other way around from what had happened.
In other words, the question that I am posing is: who was the suitor and who was the suitee? Was it Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak courting Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim or was it the other way around?
That is basically the crux of the whole matter.
To be honest, though, I do not know who was courting whom or who first started the courtship. But I do know that marriage was in the air. And I do know who was the one who made sure it did not happen.
And this is what my story is going to be about.
Before that, however, we need to talk about the event that happened before the May 2013 general election. Najib was desperate to win back Selangor and he knew that if he could not do so then his days as Prime Minister would be numbered. Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad would make sure of that.
Anwar, on the other hand, was equally desperate. He was desperate to stay out of jail and even more desperate to become the Deputy Prime Minister, which is a necessary stepping-stone to the post of Prime Minister.
So some horse-trading was mooted. Anwar would hand Selangor to Najib by way of a state ‘Unity Government’ if Najib would make him the Deputy Prime Minister and make sure he does not end up in jail.
Anwar expected Umno and PKR to win in total at least 30 of the 56 state seats while PAS and DAP could probably win only 26 seats combined. This would give Umno and PKR a four-seat majority in the Selangor State Assembly.
Of course, PAS and DAP were not part of the plan. This was going to be a Selangor State ‘Unity Government’ between Umno and PKR, not between Barisan Nasional and Pakatan Rakyat.
Menteri Besar Khalid Ibrahim was opposed to the idea so they moved him to the Port Kelang seat, which Umno was sure of winning. That would effectively kill off Khalid although he would still be a Member of Parliament.
When the election results came in, however, Umno and PKR won just 26 seats, with Khalid unexpectedly winning the Port Kelang seat. Minus Port Kelang, Umno and PKR were left with just 25 seats against PAS’ and DAP’s 30, or 31 if Khalid throws his lot behind PAS and DAP.
That practically demolished the plan for the Selangor State ‘Unity Government’ between Umno and PKR.
But Anwar still did not give up just yet. During the Pakatan Rakyat Presidents’ Council meeting at the Sulaiman Club in Kuala Lumpur, also in 2013, Anwar whispered to Hadi that he wanted to discuss something with him privately.
After the meeting ended, Anwar pulled Hadi aside and asked him whether he was going to London in December 2013, to which Hadi confirmed that he was. Anwar then told Hadi he was going to arrange a meeting in London between him and Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
The purpose of the meeting was not revealed but Hadi suspected that it has to be about the Selangor State ‘Unity Government’, which had earlier been discussed but which had to be put on hold when Umno and PKR did not get enough seats to give them a majority.
Hadi felt a bit uncomfortable about the meeting, especially since he did not really know what the meeting was about, and he was worried that it may be a trap. So he decided he would not attend the meeting and that only his people would.
The meeting was held at The Landmark London Hotel. When Mustafa Ali and Hadi’s Political Secretary, Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar, walked into the meeting room, they were surprised to see Dr Syed Azman Syed Ahmad Nawawi of PAS and Saifuddin Nasution of PKR there as well. Zahid Hamidi, Dr Syed Azman and Saifuddin, in turn, were surprised that Hadi was absent and were very disappointed when Dr Samsuri told them that Hadi was tired and would not be able to attend the meeting.
Because of that nothing much could be discussed and the meeting ended early without any agreement even though they had initially planned to have lunch as well. Without Hadi’s presence there was no way the Selangor State ‘Unity Government’ could happen. Hadi’s absence meant he was not in support of it. And for sure the late Nik Aziz Nik Mat would not agree with the plan even if Hadi did go along with it.
Initially, the Selangor State ‘Unity Government’ was supposed to be between just Umno and PKR. But with only 25 seats it could no longer happen. So they needed PAS as well, which will give them 40 seats against DAP’s and Khalid’s 16.
So, while PKR screwed DAP by excluding them in the Selangor State ‘Unity Government’ talks, Hadi, in turn, screwed PKR by making sure the ‘Unity Government’ did not happen. Hence Hadi was the spoiler.
Anyway, this is the e-mail that I received from someone involved in the whole conspiracy that explains what happened:
Anwar’s children are talking nonsense that Najib offered DPM seat to their father. It was Anwar who begged Najib to allow him and three thousand PKR members to return to UMNO. Mahathir screwed Najib upside down for holding talks in London, Singapore and in Langkawi with Anwar. Daim had to fly to Singapore to stop the talks twice.
The latest plan is to break PAS completely after the by-election.
Azmin will not be allowed to be the Opposition Leader. Kak Wan will be chosen.
