The Election Commission has set March 22 for the Chempaka state seat by-election in Kelantan while nomination has been fixed for March 10.
The by-election is being called following the death of the incumbent and former menteri besar Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat on February 12.
EC chairman Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof today pegged the cost for the by-election at about RM810,000.
In the last general election, the Islamist party’s spiritual leader retained the seat by 6,500 votes, beating Barisan Nasional’s Wan Razman Wan Abdul Razak.
Nik Aziz garnered 12,310 votes while Wan Razman received 5,810.
Aziz said there were 21,890 registered voters in the constituency. Voters will cast their ballots at 42 streams spread over nine schools.
Aziz called on all parties to follow the law while campaigning.
Ibrahim Bakri Mat Deris has been appointed the returning officer while 403 personnel will be deployed during the period.
