Leaks can benefit Malaysia, says man detained over 1MDB reports

Leaking government documents for national interest and to fight graft will not hurt the country, says a man who was put in detention for lodging overseas police reports against 1MDB.
"If government information is leaked, in the interests of race, religion and country to fight or prevent corruption and misappropriation, then will it hurt the country?" former Umno leader Khairuddin Abu Hassan asked in a statement today.
Khairuddin was commenting on attorney-general Mohamed Apandi Ali's plan to tighten the Official Secrets Act (OSA) to punish those who leak classified documents with life imprisonment.
Apandi said journalists who protect the source of leaks will also not be spared.
Khairuddin said the attorney-general should focus on tackling alleged corruption in the 1MDB case, instead of going after whistleblowers.
'Be grateful to whistleblowers'
Meanwhile Jingga13 coordinator Fariz Musa said Apandi should be grateful to whistleblowers.
"As the AG, he should say ‘thank you’ and support all exposes and protect whistleblowers, journalists and media editors to ensure their safety.
"He should also investigate and charge those involved (in graft)," Fariz said in a statement today.
He went on to advise Apandi not to be lackey of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak, and to act as a civil servant who has honour and integrity.
Apandi's plans to clampdown on leaks comes two weeks after he cleared Najib of any wrongdoing in the RM2.6 billion donation and SRC International Sdn Bhd scandals. -Mkini
