Cops to record Phang's statement over 'false SD' tomorrow

After receiving about 10 police reports, the former owner of Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng's bungalow Phang Li Koon has finally been summoned for questioning tomorrow.
This is in relation to allegations that she had made a false statutory declaration (SD) regarding the sale of the bungalow to Lim.
Penang police chief Abdul Ghafar Wahab told reporters after a function in South Seberang Prai today that the police have summoned a total of four people for questioning, including a commissioner for oaths and a government officer.
He said Phang's statement will be recorded tomorrow, and the police will decide whether to question Lim later on.
Phang, a businesswoman, had signed the SD last week, stating that she had sold the bungalow to Lim for RM2.8 million on a willing buyer, willing seller basis, without any other benefit from the state government.
Penang Umno youth had lodged a police report urging an investigation over the SD, saying that Phang has a stake in a company listed on the InvestPenang website, and this purportedly shows Phang has business dealings with the state government.
However, DAP publicity chief Tony Pua had countered that the InvestPenang website is merely a directory that lists various businesses, and does not constitute proof of having business dealings with the state government.
Yesterday, Umno youth lodged another police report claiming that Phang's company had previously applied for the Penang Island Municipal Council's (MPPP) approval for a housing project, hence contradicting her claims that she had no business interests in the state government.
‘Application rejected in 2015’
Penang exco member Chow Kon Yeow explained at a press conference earlier today that Phang's company had indeed applied for a housing project in Balik Pulau on June 2, 2015.
However, the application was rejected on Dec 1 that year.
“Despite this, it doesn't me she has business dealings with the state government, since any private development project would require approval from the local council.
“If you go to the Immigration Department to renew your passport, or to the Road Transport Department to renew your licence, does it mean that you have business dealings with the federal government as well?” he said.
Chow added that the Penang government has already handed the documents to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).
Those who have documents that can assist investigations, he said, should hand them over to the MACC instead of holding press conferences.
He also clarified that the MACC had merely met Lim at his office two days ago, but have yet to formally record his statements. -Mkini
