Sarawak CM points out that DAP, which governs Penang, has failed to provide free bus services throughout the state, concentrating only in the city area.
KUCHING: Sarawak will consider providing free bus services to those residing in the country’s largest state, said Chief Minister Adenan Satem.
He was responding to Bukit Bendera Member of Parliament Zairil Khir Johari who said that the DAP-led Penang and PKR-led Selangor governments had already spearheaded such initiatives.
“DAP has still failed to provide free bus services to the people there (Penang), except in the city area.
“It has also failed to show any signs of taking over the private bus companies operating in the state despite having been in power for two terms.
“So maybe our friend was mistaken. But in any case, we will consider it (providing free bus services in Sarawak).”
In the run-up to the 11th state election, the Opposition, namely DAP, had played up the lack of free bus services which the party promised to provide should it be elected as the new state government.
Sarawak DAP Chairman Chong Chieng Jen, in the party’s manifesto, had proposed a three-fold increase in the number of buses, leading to greater frequency in service.
Adenan, in response to this, had said yesterday that the Selangor and Penang state governments should set an example by providing free bus services in their states before bringing up the matter in Sarawak.
