No summons because no law broken, says Idris Haron

Malacca chief minister says he was not wearing a helmet while riding his motorcycle because the village road he was on was not gazetted under the traffic ordinance.
Idris-HaronPETALING JAYA: Malacca Chief Minister Idris Haron explained he was not issued a summons for riding a motorcycle without a helmet simply because the road he was on, was not gazetted under the traffic ordinance.
Idris told The Star this when asked to respond to news that a police report was lodged by Low Chee Leong, a special officer to Kota Laksamana DAP assemblyman Lai Kuen Ban.
Low, in his report, demanded traffic police issue a summons to Idris for the offence that he allegedly committed at Tehel last Friday. Low also wanted a summons issued to Bemban assemblyman Ng Choon Koon for riding pillion without a helmet.
Idris however told the English daily that he had requested for a helmet for both himself and Ng when the Tehel village headman asked him to follow an entourage of motorcyclists for Friday prayers.
“Because the road is in a village, the headman was reluctant (to give helmets) and wanted us to just ride along with others who were not wearing helmets at that moment,” The Star quoted him as saying.
Unhappy that such “trivial issues” were being used by the Opposition to attack him, Idris said,“They can’t find other major issues in Malacca so even not wearing a helmet is blown out of proportion.”
Ng, meanwhile, said claims that the CM was riding like a “mat rempit” were preposterous. He also expressed his disbelief that “such a nitty-gritty issue” warranted a police report to be lodged by an officer to an Opposition lawmaker.
