IGP: Schoolkids' experiments behind KLCC bomb scare

Police today exploded two jars suspected to be bombs, found at popular tourist spot Aquaria KLCC.
Hang Tuah Fire and Rescue Department operations commander Fuad Omar told Malaysiakini the items were successfully destroyed by a robot handled by the police bomb squad at about 7.45pm.
“The bombs were fashioned out of jars. There was no untoward incident,” he said when contacted.
However, inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar said preliminary investigations on the destroyed items found that they were not bombs, but experiments left by school children who had visited KLCC.
"The experiment on light placed in jars is called STARLAB, and was given to students as souvenirs by Petrosains," Khalid tweeted at about 10.20pm.
Petrosains is a science centre located at the Suria KLCC mall, and is connected to Aquaria KLCC.
According to Fuad, Aquaria KLCC cleaner spotted the jars at about 5.30pm and moved them near a trash can at the connecting Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.
KLCC security personnel suspecting something amiss contacted police, who in turn sent a bomb squad.
The Fire and Rescue Department was called in to stand by while the items were destroyed.
Fuad said the jars were destroyed at the park in front of the convention centre, after it was cordoned off from the public.
Confirming the matter, Dang Wangi police chief Zainol Samah said the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre area was cordoned off at 6pm.
Jalan Pinang and an area about 100 metres from Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre were cordoned off for 10 minutes during the operation, he said in a statement.
The incident comes days after Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi revealed that militant group IS had plotted to kidnap Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.
Police have in the past months ramped up patrols in tourist spots like KLCC, following warnings of possible terrorist attack in Kuala Lumpur.
Last month, Australia warned its citizens that a terror attack might be in the works in Kuala Lumpur.
However, police said they had no such information and assured the public that the capital city is safe. -Mkini
