COMMENT For once, Perkasa has made all the right comments. Perhaps, it is because it did not come from its president, Ibrahim Ali.
For one, its integrity, anti-corruption and abuse of power bureau chief Azrul Akmal Saharuddin is urging inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar to explain whether his daughter had benefitted from the father’s office.
On a second note, Azrul also said that Perkasa would like to see a royal commission of inquiry (RCI) on the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal.
In short, Azrul dealt with two very important issues with a fair mind, based on logical reasoning and good grounds for suspecting that there is indeed vested interest on both matters.
Conference of Rulers
To urge an RCI is the least of our concerns. My question is, after the truth has been uncovered, would it be hidden again from the people?
Would the attorney-general ignore the findings of the RCI and prosecute the parties that are guilty of squandering away the country’s resources? Would Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak heed the findings of the commissioners?
As we have seen in previous RCIs, the implementation has always been lacking under the current regime. For example, in one particular RCI report, it was recommended that the government set up an Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission (IPCMC).
Nothing happened. For that reason, the alleged bad hats in our police force continue to bring a bad reputation to the Royal Malaysian Police.
What is important, in my opinion, is for the Conference of Rulers to convene once again with great urgency to discuss what can be done to reinstate the people’s confidence in the country’s administration.
After all, more than six months have elapsed since we read the decree by the rulers with regard to 1MDB, yet investigations into the wrongdoing by the people in the corridors of power have been stalled.
The people must continue to uphold the constitutional monarchy, but if the rulers fail in bringing about the necessary actions, we cannot blame Malaysians citizens, including former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, for urging the foreign investigators to bare it all.
Where then is the dignity of Malaysians? If we are unable to carry out justice and hold those who are accountable responsible for their actions, how can we lift up our heads and say, “We are a sovereign nation?”
The tragedy
The biggest tragedy is for someone who has the power to do something and yet did nothing about it.
I am an ordinary citizen of this country. Because I have a pen, I would use the pen to stimulate people’s thinking. This is my duty as a citizen of this country, and as both salt and light, to preserve the rotting meat and to shine some light in the darkness.
As Edmund Burke once said, “all that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing about it.”
Former New Straits Times chief Kalimullah Hassan has said it (worth listening on BFM), we are moving towards a failed state.
This is why even as an ordinary man or woman, we have a role to play to prevent this country from going to the dogs. We have to save the country from a rotting regime.
