KJ: With Saudi minister claim, RM2.6b donation issue resolved

The issue of the RM2.6 billion transferred into the prime minister's accounts allegedly from a member of the Saudi royal family, is resolved, said Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin.
This is after Saudi foreign minister Adel al Jubaier told reporters he is aware of the donation, which he claimed came with no strings attached.
"So it is true that it was a donation from the Saudi government given without condition.
"So this issue is resolved. It has already been confirmed by the government who gave the funds," Khairy told reporters after attending an event by Gabungan Pelajar Melayu Semenanjung (GPMS) in Petaling Jaya today.
Adel al-Jubeir yesterday said he was aware of the donation, but critics question why the minister several months ago said he believed it was an investment and not an unconditional gift.
Attorney-general Mohamed Apandi Ali on January 26 exonerated Prime Minister Najib Razak of corruption, and said the RM2.6 billion was a donation from a Saudi royal family.
Apandi said RM2.03 billion was returned to the Saudi source, who was not named.
Make Saudi statement viral
Khairy said the latest statement by the Saudi official should be made viral to convince the public.
"We have to convince the people that the country that made the donation has confirmed it, and if this does not convince them, there is nothing we can do.
"We need to make sure what is stated by the Saudi foreign minister confirming the donation is made viral, to show there is nothing to hide," he said.
On a separate matter, the youth and sports minister said it will be up to the police to take further action on state firm 1MDB following the release of the public accounts committee (PAC) report.
"Police have reopened investigations on 1MDB based on the PAC report, so we leave it to police," he said when asked.
The PAC report on 1MDB showed the state firm also had links to Saudi royals, with its first deal initiated through a letter to Najib by Saudi's Prince Turki Faisal.
During the PAC hearings, former 1MDB CEO Shahrol Azral Halmi had explained the haste with which the US$2.5 billion joint venture with oil firm PetroSaudi was signed, less than two weeks of the matter being raised to the board of directors, to the firm's desire to have at the time witnessing the signing. -Mkini
