Led by PKR President Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail and DAP veteran leader Lim Kit Siang, they converged at the Parliament gates at 9 am before starting to march ten minutes later.
About 50 metres from Parliament, Dang Wangi police Public Order Chief Gurbinder Singh stopped them and reminded the MPs that they were breaking the Public Assembly Act for unlawful assembly.
The MPs, however, continued to March shouting “Bebaskan Rafizi” (Free Rafizi) and “Hidup Rakyat” (Long live the people) along the way before arriving at Bukit Aman entrance 15 minutes later.
Kuala Krai MP Hatta Ramli, Shah Alam MP Khalid Samad, Segambut MP Lim Lip Eng and Kapar MP G. Manivanan and Sungai Petani MP Johari Abdul represented Pakatan Harapan who handed over a memorandum to the IGP.
Manivanan told FMT that the memorandum was given to one “ASP Rizal”, who promised to deliver it to the Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar.
“In the memorandum, we want the police to free Rafizi as his arrest inside the Parliament compound was not according to the law.
“The second point is we want the police to respect Parliament’s sovereignty as it is a sacred institution in the country’s democracy,” he said after the march.
Yesterday, Khalid, on Twitter, warned the MPs not to march or face further action should they gather in front of Bukit Aman.
Rafizi were arrested on Tuesday by a police team as he was preparing to exit the compound, for his alleged distribution of a document that was classified under the Official Secrets Act 1972.
He is currently being held on a three-day remand order that police secured yesterday.
