Bebas: Hound your MPs, make them reject Hadi's bill

A campaign to urge voters to petition lawmakers to reject the proposed amendments to the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 1965, better known as Act 355, has been launched.
The campaign is organised by a group known as Bebas, which organised a small public gathering last weekend against the proposed amendments.
Bebas leader Azrul Mohd Khalib said it was important for voters to exercise their democratic role in holding lawmakers to account for laws passed in Parliament.
"We encourage voters to call their MPs, every day, to tell them to vote 'no' to the bill.
"Phone calls and visits to service centres are preferable to email, as our open letter to many of the MPs' email addresses provided on the Parliament website bounced back," Azrul said.
He said voters should then inform Bebas of their MP's response, which would then be tallied. Azrul said Bebas will constantly update a "scoreboard" on the group's Facebook page
There are three columns on the "scoreboard", denoting "Yes", "No" and "Unknown".

Azrul said that currently, a number of lawmakers have been listed in the "No" category based on public statements from the heads of their party or based on their responses to the group's open letter.
"If the MP refuses to listen to their electorate, then voters are free to kick them out in the next general election," he said, adding there was "no room for neutrality" with regard to Act 355.
The amendment bill was tabled by PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang in the Dewan Rakyat last year. It is expected to be debated when the Dewan Rakyat convenes next month.- Mkini
