Brothers on death row seek clemency at eleventh hour

Two brothers who will be executed tomorrow have pleaded for clemency from the Negri Sembilan Yang di-Pertuan Besar Tuanku Muhriz Almarhum Tuanku Munawir.
In a petition to the Yang di-Pertuan Besar today, the duo and their 70-year-old mother urged the ruler to either commute the sentence or replace it with a life sentence (20 years).
B Ramesh, 45, and B Suthar, 40, were convicted over a murder in Port Dickson which occurred 12 years ago. They have exhausted all legal avenues to appeal.
The sentence would be carried out at 6am tomorrow at the Kajang Prison.
Lawyer P Uthayakumar who wrote the letter on their behalf, pleaded to the ruler to consider this based on the fact that the brothers have endured a lengthy jail sentence which should be punishment enough for them, both mentally and physically.
He said both have suffered health issues from being kept in cramped and dirty solitary confinement cells without access to fresh air, sunlight or proper exercise in the prison yard.

He said prior to the incident, the brothers had no criminal records and that they have behaved well in prison, turning to religion and having repented for their past actions.
Uthayakumar said his clients have also expressed their intention to spend the rest of their lives doing good for society, especially in discouraging youths from being involved with gangsterism.
He added that the ruler should also take into account of the fact that Malaysia and the rest of the world were moving away from capital punishment and that there is currently a moratorium on death penalty for drug trafficking cases.- Mkini
