Nomination to open for an hour for Tg Datu polls

The nomination centre for the Tanjong Datu state by-election at Lundu Community Hall, about 80km from Kuching, will be opened from 9am to 10am on Saturday.
Election Commission (EC) chairperson Mohd Hashim Abdullah said the candidates would be announced by the returning officer soon after the completion of the one-hour nomination period.
"The official campaign period will start soon after the announcement by the returning officer this Saturday and will end at midnight on Feb 17," he said in a statement in Kuching today.
According to the EC regulations, if there was only one candidate, the seat would be won by the candidate unopposed.
Tanjong Datu state seat fell vacant with the death of Adenan Satem on Jan 11 due to heart complications at the Sarawak Heart Centre in Kota Samarahan, near Kuching.
The EC had fixed nomination day on Feb 4, early voting on Feb 12 while the polling day on Feb 18.
Adenan, 72, received 6,360 votes to beat Jazolkipli Numan of PKR who received only 468 votes in the 11th Sarawak state election in May, 2016.
Adenan was the Tanjong Datu state assemblyperson since 2006.
Yesterday, Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) had chosen Adenan's widow, Jamilah Anu as its candidate for the by-election.

Meanwhile, Mohd Hashim also urged party supporters not to gather en masse on nomination day.
He said the candidate could pay the RM5,000 deposit through a bank draft or cash, and could use a party symbol if they had a written permission from the officer in charge.
The Tanjung Datu state constituency has 9,959 registered voters comprising 9,771 ordinary voters and 188 early voters.
