Minister: Anwar keeps changing his story on forex scandal

Jailed former opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim keeps changing his story on the forex scandal, according to Communication and Multimedia Minister Salleh Said Keruak.
Anwar's latest press statement on the matter, Salleh said, appeared to have been tailored for the current political situation he has found himself in.
“When he is with Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Anwar says one thing.
“When he is opposed to Mahathir, he says something else. And now that he is, again, with Mahathir, Anwar adds a new twist to the story,” he added in a blog posting.
In 1993, Salleh noted how Anwar, who was then finance minister, denied that Bank Negara had lost money playing in the foreign exchange (forex) market.
This was in response to a question Lim Kit Siang had raised in Parliament, which is available in the parliamentary Hansard.
The following year, Salleh said Anwar told Parliament it was a small loss, and only a “paper loss”.
“He also blamed the Bank Negara governor for it and said the governor had been asked to resign,” he added.
Salleh said Anwar once again changed his story in 2012 during a forum in Penang.

“The forum was also told the loss was US$10 billion and they blamed three people for it, Daim Zainuddin and Mahathir included,” he added.
In his latest version, Salleh said, Anwar had just blamed Nor Mohamed Yakcop.
“And this is why there is a need to further probe this matter. If the truth had been revealed 24 years ago we would not still be investigating the matter today,” he added.
Anwar, who was quizzed by the task force probing the forex scandal, said he told the investigators that Nor Mohamed, who resigned from Bank Negara after the bank suffered severe losses in foreign exchange trade, was appointed as finance minister II despite a ban imposed on him.- Mkini
