‘Stop promoting careless officers in government service’

The Enforcement Agency Integrity Commission regrets that existing provisions have not been used to discipline such irresponsible officers.
Yaacob-Sam-1
PETALING JAYA: Civil servants who have been “careless” and have failed in their duties should not be promoted.
The civil service must be more firm in such matters, Enforcement Agency Integrity Commission (EAIC) chairman Yaacob Sam told Mingguan Malaysia.
He wondered how “careless and irresponsible” officers had received their promotions.
Yaacob felt strongly that existing provisions must be used to discipline such staff.
He was apparently referring to recent reports by the auditor-general how “careless” behaviour or poor supervision by civil servants had led to wastage and corruption.
Yaacob, who is also a High Court judge, said these officers proven to be careless in their duties should be barred from promotions for a certain amount of time, like three years.
Doing so would serve as a warning and raise the awareness of officers and department heads on their specific roles, as stipulated in government rules.
Yaacob said the EAIC would continue to place emphasis on the importance of department heads and senior officers keeping an eye on what their subordinates are doing. -FMT
