SHAH ALAM: The question of Dr Mahathir Mohamad helming the country again, but this time under the Pakatan Harapan (PH) banner, has never arisen, says PKR deputy president Mohamed Azmin Ali.
This is because PH leaders needed to focus on winning the next general election first, he said, adding that every party in the coalition had individuals capable of filling that post.
“Every party, every individual, has their own appeal, their own strengths. To me, we focus all our strengths (on winning the election).
“Who will become the prime minister? We’ll wait until after we win the general election,” he told reporters at an event at the Shah Alam Convention Centre here today.
His statement came following that of former Umno law minister Zaid Ibrahim, who questioned PH’s refusal to name the individual they would appoint as prime minister if the coalition came to power.
Zaid, who joined the DAP in February, also suggested Mahathir as their candidate because the senior politician could garner strong support, especially from Felda voters.
He added that PH component parties should set aside their ego and coax Mahathir into agreeing to be prime minister again, a role he held for over 22 years before he stepped down in 2003.
PH’s silence over the issue, Zaid said, would only give emphasis to Umno’s allegation that DAP leader Lim Kit Siang was the opposition’s choice for the country’s number one role.
Responding to this, Azmin, who is also Selangor menteri besar, called for Zaid to contest in the 14th general election so that he could contribute to the seats that can help PH become the government.
Azmin also reiterated that everyone was capable of becoming the prime minister if PH did indeed emerge victorious. FMT
