Thai cartoonist Stephff has republished a cartoon lampooning former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad's penchant for joining street demonstrations.
“Not forgetting that despite Dr Mahathir trying to adopt a brand-new image now, he was not better during his long reign when it came to allowing dissent voices in Malaysia. Blatant hypocrisy,” he said in a Twitter posting today.
The cartoon depicted Mahathir literally pulling the rug from under the feet of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.
The yellow rug was made up of Bersih 4.0 supporters.
A speech bubble has Mahathir stating, “Wow! I never knew it could be so much fun to challenge the authority!! I should have allowed it more often when I was PM.”
During his 22-year reign as prime minister, Mahathir was known to have little tolerance for street demonstrations.
He had unleashed the full might of the anti-riot police in curbing the Reformasi demonstrations which erupted in the aftermath of Anwar Ibrahim's sacking in 1998.
However, since launching his campaign against Najib and crossing over to the opposition, Mahathir has now become a familiar face at protests.
Yesterday, Thai newspaper The Nation published a cartoon by Stephff which took a swipe at the Anti-Fake News Bill.
Bearing a striking resemblance to Pinocchio's wooden nose which grew longer whenever he lied, the Bangkok-based cartoonist drew Najib with a fully-grown tree for a nose.
On the branches were the words “corruption”, “Scorpene submarine affair” and “1MDB”.
It also showed Najib swinging an axe at a pen and a pencil, which represented “press freedom” and “cartoonist” Zunar. -Mkini
