Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad tonight weighed in on former premier Najib Abdul Razak's complaint that the services of all his bodyguards and aides save for his aide-de-camp have been withdrawn.
Asked about the matter, Mahathir initially said that he didn't know that Najib's security officers had been taken away from him.
The former premier, however, pointed out how Najib was currently under investigation.
"So he doesn't represent the past prime ministers.
"But if he's found innocent, then he would get the same treatment as other (former) prime ministers," Mahathir told reporters after a breaking of fast ceremony with police personnel at Bukit Aman today.
In a Facebook post tonight, Najib claimed that most of his bodyguards and security personnel had been withdrawn by the new Pakatan Harapan government.
"In the last few weeks, all the security personnel, police escorts and assistants assigned to me were withdrawn by the new government except for one aide-de-camp," he said.
Najib said he bade farewell to several of these staff today.
He said they included bodyguards, Special Action Unit personnel, police escorts and other staff who were either assigned to the Prime Minister's Office or to the prime minister's official residence.
Najib also shared photographs of their emotional parting on his Facebook page.
While in the opposition, Mahathir had also complained that the then BN government under Najib had withdrawn or replaced his bodyguards and aides. -Mkini
