Opposition MPs will have to declare their assets soon

PARLIAMENT | Putrajaya will eventually compel opposition MPs to declare their assets, said Law Minister Liew Vui Keong.
In a parliamentary written reply addressed to both Ahmad Marzuk Shaary (PAS-Pengkalan Chepa) and Wong Chen (Harapan-Subang), Liew said the exact mechanics had yet to be worked out.
"Parliament may institute a rule for all MPs, including the opposition, to declare their assets to the speaker and a copy will be forwarded to the MACC," said Liew.
Having all MPs declare their assets would show their commitment towards transparency and stamping out graft.
Under Item 14 of Pakatan Harapan's election pledge, the coalition planned to compel all members of the upper and lower houses of Parliament and civil servants with Jusa C rank, and above, to declare their assets as part of an anti-corruption drive.
However, as of Oct 20, only 60 government MPs have submitted the necessary paperwork to Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad and the MACC.
MACC had initially planned to release the asset details online on Oct 1 but it was later postponed to Oct 15.
A new date has been set for Nov 1. - Mkini
