PARLIAMENT | The Foreign Ministry revoked lawyer Muhammad Shafee Abdullah's diplomatic passport on Sept 19.
According to a parliamentary written reply, the Foreign Ministry said that Shafee was issued diplomatic passports twice.
Shafee was issued the document in 2009 in his capacity as the Malaysian representative to the Asean Human Rights Intergovernmental Commission (AICHR).
In 2016, he was issued another document because he was an ambassador-at-large for Human Rights.
"The diplomatic passports were issued to Shafee to facilitate his duties as a Malaysian representative," said the Foreign Ministry.
Shafee is best known as a lawyer for former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak. The issuance of the diplomatic passport in 2009 coincided with the start of Najib's prime ministership.
Questions on Shafee's diplomatic passport were raised after he was charged with money laundering last month.
Being an ambassador-at-large means that Shafee was a grade-A civil servant. - Mkini
