Cops record Marina and Ambiga statements on Sogo rally

KUALA LUMPUR: Datin Paduka Marina Mahathir (pic, left) and Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan (pic, right) are the first of a batch of 15 activists who have left Dang Wangi district police headquarters after being questioned for about an hour.
They were being questioned over a rally in front of Sogo shopping mall on Sunday (Mar 1).
The duo exited the police headquarters at about 4pm on Wednesday (March 4).
Marina said it was a waste of the police's time calling up activists to have their statements recorded.
"Unless we have a crystal ball, how could we have known," she said, referring to the recent political crisis and subsequent rallies that occurred.
Meanwhile, Ambiga said freedom of expression and assembling peacefully was the right of the people.
"We are not the least intimidated by having our statements recorded," she said.
It was unreasonable to expect the people to keep silent after the events that occurred past few days, she added.
"It is a mistake to trouble the police in calling us to have our statements recorded.
"It is our constitutional right to express our opinions and assembly peacefully," she said.
Lawyer Ragunath Kesavan, who represented the duo, said the activists were asked the standard questions, including who participated and who organised the rally.
"It was uncalled for to record their statements as there was no incitement and the rally was conducted peacefully.
"There was no issue of harm or violence during the rally," he said. -Star
