Celebrated cartoonist Zunar has announced his latest publication, Hello Mr Peng Khia Nutt, will be in the form of an e-book to reflect the popularity of the digital format in the Covid-19 age.
True to form, the political satirist said the book is a compilation of cartoons that reflects his thoughts, stand and critique of recent pertinent political issues - or gaffes - in the country.
“The issues (covered in the book) include corruption, betrayal of the people’s mandate, weak leadership, political clownism - such as the Doraemon issue, TikTok, warm water, 500 countries and others,” the artist, whose full name is Zulkiflee SM Anwar Ulhaque, said in a statement to Malaysiakini.
Aside from the collapse of the Pakatan Harapan government, led by members of its own component party Bersatu, Zunar appeared to reference several controversies and blunders by ministers and government agencies.
This included the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry's ill-considered advice to housewives and working mothers to among others, speak in a "Doraemon-like" voice to placate their husbands during the movement control order (MCO) as well as missteps by Health Minister Dr Adham Baba.
“I picked the e-book (format) as I felt this would be the best form for readers since the Covid-19 crisis and the new digital norm.
“It would not generate a big income as e-books are exposed to piracy and replication, but my main goal is not to seek money but to deliver a message through my cartoons... as a form of education and mind opener for some readers.”
Zunar added he also wanted to deliver some cheer to the people depressed by the political situation, “thanks to all the Peng Khia Nutts”.
Hello Mr Peng Khia Nutt is available on Zunar’s official site for RM10.
Zunar also called on others to contribute through a link available at the website as “after years of providing cartoons for free… (this will) help me to keep creating.” - Mkini
