A former MACC top official has taken a swipe at Dr Mahathir Mohamad over the latter's claim that Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin will ensure six Perikatan Nasional MPs are cleared of their ongoing corruption charges.
Taking to Twitter, MACC's former chief commissioner Dzulkifli Ahmad said Mahathir's claim is tantamount to contempt of the judiciary.
"Only the court can free an accused.
"The statement that 'Muhyiddin will ensure that six MPs will be found not guilty' is a contempt of court!
"An insult to judges presiding over the cases," said Dzulkifli who was nominated by then prime minister Najib Abdul Razak to lead the MACC from Aug 1, 2016.
Dzulkifli reportedly tendered his resignation on May 14, 2018, less than a week after Mahathir's Pakatan Harapan administration took over Putrajaya in GE14.
Mahathir in a blog post yesterday alleged that Muhyiddin would ensure that six Umno MPs currently facing ongoing corruption trials, including Najib, be cleared of all charges in order to secure PN's position in Parliament.
"If these six are found guilty by the courts, they will be disqualified as MPs.
"Therefore Muhyiddin's backers will be down to 108 - less than half. And the Muhyiddin government will fall," claimed Mahathir who is now leading a faction of Bersatu supporters against Muhyiddin's leadership as prime minister and party president.
"For sure these six individuals will be found not guilty. And so Muhyiddin will be saved," he further claimed.
Aside from Najib, Mahathir also named Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Putrajaya MP Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor, former Tabung Haji chief and Baling MP Abdul Azeez Rahim, Pontian MP Ahmad Maslan and Sabah Umno liaison chief Bung Moktar Radin as the leaders to be potentially cleared of their ongoing charges.
Mahathir's motion of no confidence against Muhyiddin in Parliament was accepted ahead of the last May 18 Dewan Rakyat sitting but it did not proceed for debate after a decision was made to only have one single agenda, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong's opening address, in view of Covid-19 restrictions. - Mkini
